How to make columns narrower

Hi again Vicki

I am wanting to make my left and right columns narrower.

If I take a template like VG016(simple) it has left side and right side banners. I would like to make each of these banners much narrower - probably no more than 1 or px wide as I really want to use most of the screen width for my own page content

If I go into Styles I cannot see where I can do this ?
