New Additional Area in Templates

Postby vaatsaru » Mon May 29, 2006 7:09 pm

Hi
I noticed that now there can be one more additional area in the template that can hold advertisements or anything. What is the name of this area to be used while creating template ?
I mean, for others, we use slogan, content, logo, copyright etc ! so whats the name of this area ?

Please let me know when convenient.

You can name it anything you like. I tend to use this: content2, content3 etc. Or, you can name it image1, image2 etc.

It just needs a unique name other than ones already used like "content" is already used.

Also, you can have as many more additional areas as you like. There is no limit.

Have a look at this template overview page: http://www.ewisoft.com/a/library/template-overview.htm

Thanks a lot Vicki

This looks magnificent !
Templates can have many more areas now allowing clients to put all sorts of the contents on them.

Only small request is
They all show up the same on every page. Can we make them editable per page ?

Kelvin
Is it too difficult ? Can you explain me the problem in implementing this ?
I believe, we are just on the verge of creating an extra ordinary product if these editable areas start working per page !

This is really awesome ! Good job..

Yes, it is very exciting news.

It is on our enhancements list to implement per page but at the moment you can accomplish this by the following:

1. The first template should have content2, content3 as an example. Save that template as template1

2. The second template should have content4, content5. Save that template as a different name, template2

3. Add the first template in your website and "apply to whole" website.

4. Add the second template and select "Don't use right now" when adding the template.

5. Highlight (select) another page in your website, click select template and choose "use only on this page and all sub-pages"

Each editable area needs a unique name which is why you use content2, content3 on one template and content4, content5 on the other.

Hi Vaatsaru,

We are very glad that you like the new feature.

You can have one template for every page.
for example, your template is t1.ewt and it is for the whole website.
Rename it as t2.ewt and add it.
Then assign a page with template t2.ewt
You can have different contents in t2.ewt.

Best regards,

Rename it as t2.ewt and add it.

Actually, I have tested this and you cannot just rename the file. There needs to be unique editable area names.

One template would need to have content2
The other template would need to have content3

So you actually have to build 2 templates with unique named content areas.

Also, I have found one major 'deviation' from Ewisoft's standard behavior and template support.

For example:
When you put contents, logo and copyright etc while creating one website with one template
and
now you choose to select a different template for that same website, the contents you already entered are preserved and displayed with the new template as well.

This is expected behavior and the heart of template based/driven software.

Now why I DON'T see the same thing with these additional areas that I put in the template ?

I mean, I create a template with one additional area 'content2' and added some contents to that area in my website when using that template.
Now I have another template with same content area name 'content2' and when I choose that for my website, my previous doesn't display.

This is INCORRECT behavior and against the sole concept of Ewisoft and template driven websites.
Then whats the use of additional area in the template ?

This needs to be changed as soon as possible.

Kelvin
Please let me know what you think on this. and also on the point that Vicki has asked above.

Vaatsaru,

I tested this and when I change template in my website, the content2 keeps the same content. Both templates using "content2" as an editable area. You are not getting the same result?

Do you have a couple trial version templates for me to test with?

Oh wait. I just tested it again and the content got lost in the content2 area. Hmmm. You are right Vaatsaru.

Maybe Kelvin has an idea.
